162. Within (part 1)

guests: Mitch Pileggi (Assistant Director Walter Skinner) James Pickens Jr. (Deputy Director Kersh) Tom Braidwood (Frohike) Dean Haglund (Langly) Bruce Harwood (Byers) Kirk B.R. Woller (Agent Gene Crane) Jeff Gulka (Gibson Praise) Jonathan Palmer (Principal) Marc Gomes (Agent Danny Mosley) Christine Firkins (Thea Sprecher)

Newly appointed Deputy Director Kersh organises a manhunt for Mulder and assigns Agent John Doggett to head the team. Scully and Skinner go along with the investigation but are warned by Kersh that they will be fired if anything is said about aliens. Scully , along with the Lone Gunmen, summise that the Bounty Hunter is trying to erase all evidence of abductions and they realise that he may be going after Gibson Praise, who is now living at a school in Arizona. Agent Doggett comes to the same conclusion and his team race Scully and Skinner to the school where they find Mulder trying to kidnap Gibson.

NOTE: Dedication: In Memoriam - Jim Engh 1961-2000. Jim Engh was a member of the production crew who was electrocuted while filming a scene from a scaffold for this episode. Six other crew members were injured in the accident.

  • Agent John Doggett is named after sports commentator Vin Scully's co-commentator, Jerry Doggett. Vin Scully is the man for whom Dana Scully is named.
  • The titles of this two part season premiere 'Within' and 'Without' is from a line by Deep Throat in the season 2 premiere 'The Blessing Way'. When Mulder talks to him in the dream state, Deep Throat says "Go back. Do not look into the abyss or let the abyss look into you. Awaken the sleep of reason and fight the monsters within and without."
  • This episode marks the first major change to the opening credits since the show first started with new images, updated photos for David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson and the addition of Robert Patrick to the main cast.
  • Jim Engh's life span (1961-2000) is the same that Mulder had on his tombstone in this episode. Coincedence? I think not.

    163. Without (part 2)

guests: Mitch Pileggi (Assistant Director Walter Skinner) James Pickens Jr. (Deputy Director Kersh) Brian Thompson (Bounty Hunter) Kirk B.R. Woller (Agent Gene Crane) Jeff Gulka (Gibson Praise) Jonathan Palmer (Principal) Marc Gomes (Agent Danny Mosley) Christine Firkins (Thea Sprecher) Sal Landi (Agent Landau)

As the search for Mulder intensifies in the Arizona desert, Gibson Praise leads Scully to believe that she is truly closer to her target. Meanwhile AD Kersh informs Agent Doggett that he has been assigned as Mulder's sucessor on the X-Files.

    164. Patience

guests: Bradford English (Detective Abbott) Gene Dynarski (Ernie Stefuniak) Dan Leegent (Myron Stefuniak) Jay Caputo (Bat Man) Eve Brenner (Little Old Lady)

While tackling his first X-File case about a series of gruesome murders surrounding a bat-like creature, Doggett quickly learns that his investigative techniques are somewhat dissimilar to Scully's.

    165. Roadrunners

guests: David Barry Gray (Hank Gulatarski) Lawrence Pressman (Mr. Milsap) Conor O'Farrell (Sheriff Ciolino) William O'Leary (Gas Station Man) Rusty Schwimmer (Bus Driver)

Scully evades Doggett's help in investigating a vicious murder in a remote area of Utah and she is trapped in the small town by a religious cult that believe a slug-like creature is the second coming of God who needs a human host to survive.

NOTE: This episode is one of the most violent and bloody ever of the series. Critics said that in the absence of Mulder, the show was taking on a more gore-filled appearence.

  • Conor O'Farrell is no stranger to Sci-Fi staring in many sci-fi T.V. shows like: Dark Skies, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

    166. Invocation

guests: Kim Greist (Lisa Underwood) Jim Cody Williams (Cal Jeppy) Rodney Eastman (Ronald Purnell) Erich Anderson (Doug Underwood) Kyle Pepi (Billy Underwood) Ryan Pepi (Billy Underwood) Sheila Shaw (Marcia Purnell) Barry Cullison (Sheriff Sanchez) Maggie Baird (Sharon Pearl) Colton James (Josh Underwood)

In 1990 a little boy unexplainably disappeared from his crowded school playground and was never seen again; that is until now, ten years later, and he hasn't aged a day since.

    167. Redrum

guests: Joe Morton (Martin Wells) Bellamy Young (Janet Wilson) Guy Torry (Shorty) Joanna Sanchez (Trina) J. Patrick McCormack (Brent Tufeld) Jack Shearer (Judge Kinberg) Lee Duncan (Al Cawdry) Cynthia Martells (District Attorney) Danny Trejo (Cesar Ocampo)

A prominent lawyer wakes to find himself in jail and about to be prosecuted for the murder of his wife. He has no memory of this event however, and when the days begin to regress backward towards the murder, he realizes that he has been given a second chance.

NOTE: Robert Patrick and Joe Morton worked together on Terminator 2: Judgement Day, where Patrick played the T-1000, and Morton was the creator of the future super computer, Miles Dyson.

    168. Via Negativa

guests: Mitch Pileggi (Assistant Director Walter Skinner) Christopher Jacobs (E.R. Doctor) Keith Szarabajka (Anthony Tipet) James Pickens Jr. (Deputy Director Kersh) Tom Braidwood (Frohike) Dean Haglund (Langly) Bruce Harwood (Byers) Kirk B.R. Woller (Agent Gene Crane) Grant Heslov (Dr. Andre Bormanis)

Working without Scully's input, Doggett and Skinner try to avert the mysterious murder spree of a drug-induced, religious cult leader and it becomes clear that the man can enter the dreams of the people he knows and can kill them in their sleep.

NOTE: This is the first X-Files episode where we learn that Langly's first name is 'Richard'. In the season 5 episode "Unusual Suspects" there was a scene where Langly is called 'Ringo' but it was cut from the finished version.

    169. Surekill

guests: Michael Bowen (Dwight Cooper) Kellie Waymire (Tammi Peyton) Patrick Kilpatrick (Randall Cooper) Joe Sabatino (Captain Al Triguero) Tom Jourden (Carlton Chase)

NOTE: Agent Doggett comments that you can only see metal men in movies; a reference to him playing the liquid-metal T-1000 in Terminator 2 - Judgement Day.

  • Scott MacDonald will be well known by Star Trek fans, as hes well known for playing many extra parts in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager , Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Enterprise.

    171. Badlaa

guests: Michael Welch (Trevor) Jordan Warkol (Quinton) Deep Roy (Beggar) Bill Dow (Dr Charles Burks) Andy Hubbell (Quinton's Dad) Jane Daly (Mrs. Holt)

An Indian mystic whose son died in a chemical plant accident smuggles himself into the United States and and takes his revenge on two families in suburban Washington D.C.

NOTE: Guest star Deep Roy played Mr Sin in the Dr Who story The Talons of Weng-Chiang.

    172. The Gift

guests: Mitch Pileggi (Assistant Director Walter Skinner) Caroline Lagerfelt (Rustic Woman) Tom Braidwood (Frohike) Dean Haglund (Langly) Bruce Harwood (Byers) Jordan Marder (Creature) Natalie Radford (Marie Hangemuhl) Michael McGrady (Sheriff Kurt Frey) Justin Williams (Paul Hangemuhl)

Doggett comes upon an old case that Mulder kept secret from Scully and he follows up the investigation, hoping to find a possible connection to Mulder's disappearance.

NOTE: Although Mulder briefly returns in this episode, albeit in flashbacks, Scully does not appear at all.

  • Mulder is mentioned as having a Walther PPK as a second weapon - the same gun he used to kill John Lee Roche in "Paper Hearts".

    173. Medusa

When Scully and Doggett are contacted by a man who claims his wife was murdered shortly after giving birth to an alien baby, Scully digs deeper into reports of alien fertilization on humans and she begins to question her own pregnancy and it's conception.

NOTE: Mulder appears in flashback form several times during this episode, and his badge returns to the opening credits.

    175. This Is Not Happening (part 1)

guests: Annabeth Gish (Special Agent Monica Reyes) Mitch Pileggi (Assistant Director Walter Skinner) Roy Thinnes (Jeremiah Smith) Judd Trichter (Richie Szalay) Judson Scott (Absalom) Sarah Koskoff (Teresa Hoese) Bernard White (Dr. Desai) Eddie Kaye Thomas (Gary Cory)

When Teresa Hoese, the woman Scully & Mulder met the previous spring in Oregon just before Mulder was abducted, is found in a desert, returned from testing done on her by aliens, Doggett alerts Scully that this could have something to do with Mulder and his whereabouts. Skinner joins them and they travel to the hospital where Teresa is, clinging to life by a thread, and Scully realizes that this is exactly what's going on with Mulder. The agents catch up with Richie Szalay, who found Teresa Hoese and was looking for his friend, and talk to him. Richie says that the area has been heavily covered with UFO activity and thought he might find his friend here but instead found Teresa. Meanwhile, Jeremiah Smith is back with his friend, Absalom, who belives in the coming alien apocalypse. Jeremiah has been taking the returned abductees and secretly healing all their wounds so that they wouldn't die. Being a shapeshifter, Jeremiah walked into the hospital that Teresa Hoese was in and posed as her doctor, transfering her out to his place in the woods so that he might heal her, too. That night, Scully goes to talk to Skinner about how she's afraid that they're going to find Mulder like Teresa, near death or already dead. Skinner says they'll find him alive. The next day, Doggett calls Scully and Skinner out to a field to get another point of view from an FBI agent from New Orleans that worked on his son's murder case with him. Her name is Monica Reyes and she specializes in ritualistic crimes and religious cults. Monica thinks that Mulder may have joined some sort of UFO cult but Scully disagrees. That night, Reyes is driving back when she spots a UFO. She gets out, only to stumble onto the body of Richie's friend. With evidence, Scully, Skinner, Doggett, and Reyes storm the house of Jeremiah Smith, Absalom, and all the abductees that have been healed, looking for Mulder. Scully interviews Jeremiah, asking about Mulder, and Jeremiah says that he was trying to help Mulder when the FBI came storming in. Before she could do anything, Skinner pulls Scully out of the room to tell her that they found Mulder. They rush out to the field where people are standing over the lifeless body of Fox Mulder. Seeing that Mulder is dead, Scully rushes back to get Jeremiah to help but before she reaches the house, Jeremiah is abducted...

NOTE: Annabeth Gish is billed under the Also Starring heading, not bad for her debut episode considering others like Mitch Pileggi had to make a few appearances before being billed with an Also Starring credit.

    176. DeadAlive (part 2)

guests: Nicholas Lea (Alex Krycek) Mitch Pileggi (Assistant Director Walter Skinner) James Pickens Jr. (Deputy Director Kersh) Tom Braidwood (Frohike) Dean Haglund (Langly) Bruce Harwood (Byers) Judson Scott (Absalom) Zachary Ansley (Billy Miles) Sheila Larken (Margaret Scully) Gibby Brand (Arthur Gaffin) Richard McGonagle (Dr. Francis Orovetz)

Shortly after Mulder is buried, Billy Miles is found very dead but somehow comes back to life. Skinner and Scully put all their hopes into digging up Mulder and discovering that he too, is still alive. As Mulder lies in hospital without indication that he is going to fully recover, Krycek comes to Skinner and offers him a vaccine to the virus that has infected Mulder - but the cost of the vaccine is that Skinner has to kill Scully's unborn child.

    177. Three Words

guests: Mitch Pileggi (Assistant Director Walter Skinner) James Pickens Jr. (Deputy Director Kersh) Tom Braidwood (Frohike) Dean Haglund (Langly) Bruce Harwood (Byers) Judson Scott (Absalom) Adam Baldwin (Knowle Rohrer)

Mulder's request for reassignment to the X-Files is denied by Kersh, who hopes that Mulder will simply quit the FBI. When a census worker is killed on the White House lawn trying to get information to the President, Mulder gets in over his head trying to discover what the man knew.

NOTE: The title of this episode refers to the three words "Fight the Future".

  • Adam Baldwin maybe better known to some as Michael O'Ryan in The Visitor

    178. Empedocles

guests: Annabeth Gish (Special Agent Monica Reyes) Cheryl Francis Harrington (E.R. Nurse) Jay Underwood (Jeb Dukes) Wendy Gazelle (Kathy Dukes) Denise Crosby (Dr. Mary Speake) Ron Canada (Detective Franklin Potter) Devlin Elliott (Pizza Delivery Man)

Special Agent Reyes enlists Mulder's help in investigating a supernatural killer's connection to the unsolved murder of Agent Doggett's son, Luke.

NOTE: Denise Crosby will be better known to Star Trek fans as Tasha Yar [(season 1, and recurring roles) in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

    179. Vienen

guests: Mitch Pileggi (Assistant Director Walter Skinner) Miguel Sandoval (Martin Ortega) Casey Biggs (Saksa) Gregory Norman Cruz (Diego Garza) James Pickens Jr. (Deputy Director Kersh) M. C. Gainey (Bo Taylor) Lee Reherman (Yuri)

Mulder and Doggett are reluctantly thrown together to investigate several deaths aboard an oil rig and Mulder becomes convinced that the rig is really carrying the black oil alien.

NOTE: "Vienen" is Spanish for 'They Come'.

    180. Alone

guests: Mitch Pileggi (Assistant Director Walter Skinner) Jolie Jenkins (Agent Leyla Harrison) Jay Caputo (Salamander Man) Tony Ketcham (Gary Sacks) Zach Grenier (Herman Stites)

While Scully takes maternity leave, Doggett is partnered with a young agent who is fascinated with the X-Files and has followed Mulder and Scully's careers. She and Doggett investigate the death of an old man and the disappearance of his son but when they disappear as well, Mulder, despite having left the FBI, heads out to search for them.

NOTE: Agent Leyla Harrison was named for X-Files fan Leyla Harrison, whose life was tragically cut short in February 2001 when she lost her battle with skin cancer.

  • Much like a real fan of the show, Leyla is full of information about the X-Files and makes references to several cases including Squeeze/Tooms (the liver eating mutant who died under an escalator), The Beginning (an alien who sheds its skin), and Detour (the subterranean men). In the end she asks Mulder about how he saved Scully from the spaceship, referring to the feature movie.
  • When Scully is cleaning out her desk, the penny & dime was from "Dreamland I & II", the dog tag was from her dog she got in "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose"
  • Just a thought. As I watched the end of this episode and seeing the conversation between Mulder and Scully, to me at least they seemed like an old married couple.

    181. Essence (part 1)

guests: Nicholas Lea (Alex Krycek) Annabeth Gish (Special Agent Monica Reyes) Mitch Pileggi (Assistant Director Walter Skinner) Frances Fisher (Lizzie Gill) Jay Acovone (Duffy Haskell) Kirk B.R. Woller (Agent Gene Crane) Sheila Larken (Margaret Scully) Zachary Ansley (Billy Miles) Steven Anderson (Dr. James Parenti) David Purdham (Dr. Lev) Denise Crosby (Dr. Mary Speake)

Mulder and Doggett join forces to investigate the arson attack on a genetics lab where one of the doctors suspected of experimenting with alien impregnation is killed. They encounter Billy Miles, who has been changed into an alien replicant after his recent abduction and is attempting to erase evidence of the tests; part of the Syndicate's conspiracy with an alien race. When a woman helping Scully out at home is found to be a part of the conspiracy, the agents, along with Monica Reyes and Alex Krycek, know they must protect Scully and her baby from Billy Miles and get her out of the city.

NOTE: Doggett and Mulder refer to Billy Miles as a 'kid' when really he would be about 29 or 30 years old, definitely not a kid.

  • Arlene Pileggi briefly appears as one of the guests at Scully's baby shower. Pileggi has previously appeared as Skinner's secretary in several episodes. Perhaps it is the same character and Scully has formed a friendship with the woman; given the amount of time that Scully spends in Skinner's office.

    182. Existence (part 2)

guests: Nicholas Lea (Alex Krycek) Annabeth Gish (Special Agent Monica Reyes) Mitch Pileggi (Assistant Director Walter Skinner) James Pickens Jr. (Deputy Director Kersh) Kirk B.R. Woller (Agent Gene Crane) Tom Braidwood (Frohike) Dean Haglund (Langly) Bruce Harwood (Byers) Zachary Ansley (Billy Miles) Austin Tichenor (Dr. James Langenhahn) Adam Baldwin (Knowle Rohrer)

Mulder, Doggett and Skinner attempt to fight off the alien replicants and they find a connection to the conspiracy that leads into the FBI, while Reyes and Scully head to a remote farm to safeguard the birth of Scully's child.

NOTE: Scully's baby is played by Jerry Shiban, the son of writer/producer John Shiban.

  • While Mulder holds their son, we see the 3rd on-screen kiss between Mulder & Scully.

    "This Is Not Happening"

DOGGETT: I know where you're going with this, Agent Scully but if you're going to tell me this is another alien bounty hunter this is where we part company.

    SCULLY: Enjoy your new company.
